Key concepts & formulas — Construction Management

Critical path

The longest path through the network; its activities have zero (minimum) float/slack.

PERT expected time

te = (to + 4tm + tp)/6; variance = ((tp − to)/6)².

Total float

TF = LFT − EFT = LST − EST. Free float ≤ total float.

Equipment selection

A crane provides full 3-D movement of loads on site.

Exam relevance

3–5 questions in AE papers; the CPM/PERT theory is quick to revise and reliably tested.

Study tip

Practise one full CPM network and one PERT problem — they cover most management MCQs.

Worked example

Sample Construction Management MCQ

In CPM, the activities lying on the critical path have a total float equal to:

A. Maximum
B. Zero
C. One
D. Infinity
Answer: B. The critical path is the longest path through the network; its activities have zero total float, so any delay on them delays the whole project.

Common mistakes to avoid

Critical path = longest path = zero float (not the shortest path).
PERT expected time te = (to + 4tm + tp)/6; variance = ((tp − to)/6)².
Free float is always less than or equal to total float.
CPM is activity-oriented and deterministic; PERT is event-oriented and probabilistic.
