RCC— Important Topics, Formulas & MCQs

Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) design is a core technical subject for AE/JE Civil. It covers the behaviour and design of concrete members reinforced with steel, governed largely by IS 456:2000 using the Limit State Method. Expect questions on design constants, development length, and detailing.

Important topics in RCC

Working Stress vs Limit State Method
Singly & doubly reinforced beams
Limiting depth of neutral axis, Mu,lim
Shear, bond and development length (Ld)
Design of slabs (one-way & two-way)
Design of columns (short & long, axial & eccentric)
Design of footings
Working stress: modular ratio, permissible stresses
IS 456 detailing rules — cover, spacing, minimum steel
Deflection & crack control (serviceability)
Must-know

Key concepts & formulas — RCC

Development length

Ld = φσs/(4τbd). For deformed bars increase τbd by 60%; for compression by 25%.

Limit State partial factors

Load factor 1.5 (DL+LL); material factors 1.5 (concrete), 1.15 (steel) → 0.45fck and 0.87fy.

Modular ratio (WSM)

m = 280/(3·σcbc). Used to locate the neutral axis of a cracked section.

Minimum & maximum steel

Beams: Ast,min = 0.85bd/fy; Ast,max = 0.04bD. Critical for short detailing MCQs.

Exam relevance

5–8 questions in AE-level papers and a dedicated IS 456 series on ScoreCardAI. Code-based, so answers are precise and scorable.

Study tip

Memorise the IS 456 constants (0.36, 0.42, 0.87fy, Ld factors) — most RCC MCQs are direct applications of them.

Worked example

Sample RCC MCQ

For M30 concrete and Fe 500 deformed bars, the development length in tension is approximately (design bond stress for plain bars = 1.5 MPa):

A. 23 φ
B. 36 φ
C. 47 φ
D. 58 φ
Answer: C. τbd for deformed bars in tension = 1.5 × 1.6 = 2.4 MPa. Ld = (0.87 × 500 × φ)/(4 × 2.4) = 435φ/9.6 ≈ 45.3φ ≈ 47φ.

Common mistakes to avoid

Forgetting the 60% increase in bond stress for deformed bars (and the extra 25% for compression).
Mixing up 0.36fck (compressive force block) with 0.42xu (lever-arm depth).
Combining Working Stress and Limit State stresses in the same calculation.
Ignoring minimum (0.85bd/fy) or maximum (0.04bD) steel limits in detailing questions.
